MINUTES OF
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
ALL
The meeting was called to order by President Pam Schneeman
at
Pam introduced the topic of the meeting, i.e. repairs to the sanctuary roof, and turned the floor over to Rich Atwater.
Rich indicated that he was speaking on behalf of the Building Maintenance Committee. He reviewed that in the past few months repairs have been made to the south-side windows in the sanctuary. After that job was completed, it was noticed that rainwater was coming in behind the south sanctuary wall because the roof is in need of repair. He indicated that a decision was needed to either install a new roof (involving the application of a sheet of rubber) on the sanctuary for approximately $26,000 or doing a simple repair or patch job for approximately $7,000. Rich stated that the committee was not certain which of these options was preferable but sought the approval of the congregation to spend up to $26,000. After receiving approval, the committee would further consider the issue and then choose one of the options. Rich noted that the funds were to come from the Endowment. He further noted that repair/replacement of the sanctuary roof was part of the larger building refurbishment plan that was to be funded by a capital campaign but that the dates for the campaign had not yet been set.
Betty Schrementi made a motion that the Building Committee be authorized to spend up to $26,000 on the sanctuary roof and urging the committee to give strong consideration to doing the roof replacement for $26,000 rather than the less expensive repair job. Mary Branson seconded the motion.
Congregation members asked several questions. A discussion developed concerning the level of quality of a “rubber” roof and how long it might be expected to last. Bob Stanis, a member of the Building Maintenance Committee speaking from the floor, said that a “rubber” roof could last 20 to 25 years. He also called the current roof a “Cadillac” class roof, i.e. a roof of pitch and gravel. He stated that a replacement of the current roof with a new pitch and gravel roof could be done and would last longer but would be more expensive than the “rubber” roof.
The question was called and a voice vote was taken and the motion carried. Three votes against the motion were noted.
Pam adjourned the meeting at
