The goal of the Huusier Paluuza is to celebrate the creative spirit of Unitarian Universalism
and make visible the uncommon denomination.
This revival-style extravaganza will highlight the “big tent” philosophy of UUism, celebrating and
creatively expressing the unconditional love and acceptance of our faith. This event includes
family activities in the afternoon, a youth-led worship service, a rock-band, a community meal,
and an evening of music and worship featuring "firebrand" preachers Rev. Meg Barnhouse and
Rev. Bill Breeden (UU Bloomington). Organized by Central Indiana UU Congregations, the event
will take place on the the UUI campus with major activities occuring under a large tent on the
grounds.

Purpose: On Saturday, September 18, a camp-meeting style event on the UUI campus will
highlight the welcoming spirit and sensory dimensions of our faith in a one-of a kind experience
that will bring Central Indiana UUs together and introduce UUism to our neighborhood and
community. Our goal is to make visible the uncommon denomination in greater Indianapolis by:
• Creatively expressing the “big tent” philosophy of UUism that flows from our
Universalist heritage and our present day commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of all
people.
• Exploring spirituality through the arts and the arts through spirituality. We will celebrate
creativity and worship, not as products passively consumed or observed, but rather as a deep
form of both personal and communal expression of and for the s/Spirit.
• Presenting UUism as a multidimensional faith of broad generational appeal with wide ranging
opportunities for participation, celebration, and fellowship.
• Mining and showcasing the cultural riches within Central Indiana’s UU congregations.
• Demonstrating the cooperative and collaborative spirit of our denomination.
Event Schedule:
2-5 pm: Intergenerational family activities throughout the UUI campus will highlight UU principles
with activities that combine creativity and spirituality. Sample projects include community art or
banner-making activity, drumming circles, indigo-dyeing, chant circles, music and theatre
improvisation, liturgical dance, and more.
4:30-5 pm: An intergenerational worship service organized and led by UU youth and/or young
adults.
5-6 pm: A concert by Chicago-based rock band, “Cobalt and the Hired Guns,” whose 20-
something members were raised in UUism (played at a youth con at UUI last year).
6-7 pm: A community meal.
7-10 pm: A revival-style evening that creatively blends worship, music, and humor. “Firebrand”
preachers will include Rev. Meg Barnhouse (humorist, singer-songwriter, NPR commentator, and
interim UU minister), Rev. Bill Breeden (UU Bloomington Church), and Rev. Stephen Sinclair
(UUI). Music from the Celebration Choir (composed of Central Indiana UU congregants as well
as UUI neighbors), Thin Air (an improvisation ensemble at UUI), and the UU Blues Gospel Band
(from UU Bloomington) will enliven the evening, which include many opportunities for
congregational singing and participation.
On display in the UUI sanctuary throughout the day will be an art exhibit related to Huusier
Paluuza themes from artists in all Central Indiana UU congregations.
