All Souls Unitarian Church
Building Renovation Project

Tour the Restorations and Enhancements of
Our Church (continued)

Just past the elevator on the south wall is the brand new, spacious, women's
restroom, fifty percent larger than the old one.  The new men's restroom is
located right next to it.  As you walk along the west wall, a more accessible
door to the outside invites you to explore the gardens.  On the north wall you'll
find a new private entrance to the minister's office for those who wish a discrete
visit with the minister.  Another minor structural change, a new entrance to the church office, has been added in place of the
sliding glass window.  Weekday visitors will no longer be confused trying to locate the office entrance, currently found under
a staircase.

Overall, lobby enhancements have added to the beauty of our church.  New attractive flooring replaces the existing tiles.  On
the ceiling, low-cost sculpture effects make the lobby a much more appealing place.  The added lobby space also gives us a
good overflow area for congregational dinners and can be used as an area for meetings, displays, or small receptions.

We next ascend to the choir loft to view our newly restored organ.  Our high quality historic organ was designed by Walter
Holtkamp, a pivotal figure in American organ design.  As we open the door we no longer see a heavily worn console but
rather a rebuilt modern one.  The obsolete control system, with its thousands of worn electrical contacts, has been replaced
with modern electronics and new wiring.  The pipework has been reconditioned and tonal revisions made.   The magic in the
music will be kept for many, many more years to come!

From the choir loft as we look out over the sanctuary, we see a newly refinished south wall, no longer highlighted by cracks
and stains.  A less visible addition, but nevertheless an important renovation, is a greatly improved sound system.  New
speakers and modern acoustical techniques work to equalize volume and improve the sound quality of our Sunday services.

As we walk through the Beattie Room, we see that this drab room has been revitalized with modern lighting, new ceiling tiles,
and a fresh paint scheme.  You notice the kitchen has a new location.  The food bar is now easily accessible for serving
special events.
